Kids-Talk Poetry Slam

Kids-TALK CAC Youth Poetry Slam

09/30/2020
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Eastern Market Shed 2

Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center, in collaboration with Youth United, is pleased to announce our rescheduled 10th Annual Youth Poetry Slam, to be held on Wednesday, September 30th at the new open air location of Eastern Market Shed 2! Our esteemed MC for the event will be Natasha T. Miller. We are also bringing back a former youth participant, now recording artist, D. Anonymous, for a performance!

With over 8,000 confirmed victims of child abuse and neglect in Wayne County each year, Kids-TALK CAC, a program of The Guidance Center, is dedicated to ending violence against children in our community–but we know the most powerful voices are those of children themselves. Please help us identify area youth to participate in the Youth Poetry Slam. Attached is a flyer with more information and a call for slam poets.

To attend in person, masks and registration are required (capped at 100 participants, per Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order) using our Eventbrite link: bit.ly/poetryslam2020

The slam will also be live streamed on the Kids-TALK CAC Facebook page for those viewing from home: www.facebook.com/Kids.talk.cac/live/

If you have any questions, would like to register a poet, or want to get involved, please contact Kids-TALK CAC Supervisor, Lacea Zavala at: LZavala@guidance-center.org or 734-785-7705 x7291. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Please consider uploading the flyer to your social media, or sharing from our pages.

True Inclusion Is Revolutionary: A Training Series in Practicing Disability Justice

08/14/2020 - 08/28/2020
10:00 am - 11:30 am

Zoom

The Transforming Power Fund in partnership with Detroit Disability Power is hosting a two-part training series on Disability Justice, September 14 and 28 from 10 to 11:30 am.

We invite you participate and learn, practice, and explore how the principles of Disability Justice apply to you and your social justice organization’s work. This two-part training will center the experiences of people with disabilities, but will also cover issues of race, class, gender and citizenship, particularly as they intersect with disability experience. We will discuss where the disability movement is right now and why; how each of us can help end ableism; and how to ensure that our social justice work is inclusive of people with disabilities and a disability justice lens. We will practice and discuss concrete strategies you and your team can implement for accessible and inclusive organizing.

This training is designed for senior-level staff. We also recommend at least two people from your organization participate.

Register for the training here by September 5th.
